INTERIOR PROVOCATIONS - Interiors Without Architecture

Call For Proposals: Praxis + History/ Theory

The second annual Pratt Interior Provocations symposium, Interiors without Architecture, seeks papers addressing the broad cultural, historical, and theoretical implications of interiors beyond their conventionally defined architectural boundaries, and not limited by interior design’s traditional associations with decoration, taste, and social status.

This conference encourages provocative and boundary-expanding proposals from design practitioners, historians, and theorists addressing, for example, the implications of interior design expertise applied to prefabricated, reused enclosures not originally intended for human occupation; interiors composed by natural geography; interior environments created for literature, film, stage and virtual reality; interiors constructed within external urban surroundings; mobile interiors, inhabitable art; infrastructural interiors; interior landscapes; adaptive reuse and interiors; and interiors on and for display, including period rooms, model rooms, dioramas, and store display windows.

Educating Architects and Planners in the Twentieth Century

Call for Abstracts: “Educating Architects and Planners in the Twentieth Century”
8 September 2017
School of Architecture and Planning, The University of Auckland, New Zealand

On 8-9 September 2017, the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland celebrates its centenary. Events include a symposium on the Friday, followed that evening by a book launch and exhibition opening, with both projects addressing the history of the Auckland School. On the Saturday there will be a series of panel discussions bringing together groups of our alumni from different generations and, that evening, a gala dinner.

Our current research on the history of the Auckland School is producing a survey of its formation, growth and development. We now seek papers that examine particular episodes, events and people associated with the Auckland School over its first 100 years, and also papers on the histories of architecture and planning education elsewhere.

Themes of interest to us include, but are not limited to:

Design Education in the Nordic Countries

Design Education in the Nordic Countries
23-24 September 2016, Helsinki

The conference examines interaction within the Nordic region and in the international framework. What was the relation to the German Bauhaus and other 20th century progressive design schools in Europe and in the USA? What kind of connections were there to design schools of the Baltic countries during Soviet era and later. And how is it now: what is the status of education in national design policies of the Nordic countries?

We welcome abstracts for 20 minutes conference papers from scholars from a diverse range of disciplines on the theme of design education. Topics that may be considered include, but are not limited to:
- Methods of research in design education
- Locality / nationality as context of design education
- Interaction and collaboration between Nordic actors of design education
- Bauhaus and other "foreign" influences in Nordic design education
- Links to design schools in the region of the former Soviet Union
- Professionals coming outside of design education
- Characteristics of contemporary design education in the Nordic countries

Critical Collaborations: Neutralizing Power in Art and Design History

Critical Collaborations: Neutralizing Power in Art and Design History
15-18 February 2017, New York

We welcome submissions that look to histories of art and design collaboration that confront and disarm power structures, be they institutional, research methods-based, or material. This panel aims to foster a dynamic discussion that will address projects that focus on histories of collaboration and engagement practices. Contributions focusing on non-Western contexts will be favored to consider not what history or design mean in various constituencies, but what present collaboration across geographies can afford the intellectual, social and cultural aspects of art and design.

Potential Subject Areas: 1) Art History-Decorative Arts/Textiles/ Design History; 2) Interdisciplinary-Museum Studies/Curatorial Studies/Art Criticism; 3) Interdisciplinary-Studio Art & Art History
