Call for Abstracts: “Educating Architects and Planners in the Twentieth Century”
8 September 2017
School of Architecture and Planning, The University of Auckland, New Zealand
On 8-9 September 2017, the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Auckland celebrates its centenary. Events include a symposium on the Friday, followed that evening by a book launch and exhibition opening, with both projects addressing the history of the Auckland School. On the Saturday there will be a series of panel discussions bringing together groups of our alumni from different generations and, that evening, a gala dinner.
Our current research on the history of the Auckland School is producing a survey of its formation, growth and development. We now seek papers that examine particular episodes, events and people associated with the Auckland School over its first 100 years, and also papers on the histories of architecture and planning education elsewhere.
Themes of interest to us include, but are not limited to:
- The formation of architecture and planning schools and programmes;
- The gradual demise of the apprenticeship model;
- The extent to which Beaux-Arts methods were or were not used in particular schools;
- The modernisation and professionalisation of programmes;
- Key members of staff, including their visions, their public voice as critics or commentators, and/or notable factions among staff;
- Changing demographics, including gender, ethnicity and internationalisation;
- Changing priorities and technologies, from environmental sustainability to the digital age;
- The evolution, in education, from town planning to urban design;
- Accommodation, space and the ways in which physical environments have influenced the pedagogies of particular institutions;
- Pedagogical clusters that have served as strengths or points of difference for particular schools or programmes;
- Pedagogical experiments and their effects;
- Student-led initiatives, including activism and congresses;
- The relationships that have existed between the disciplines of architecture and planning in universities that offer both, or between the disciplines and the professions;
- Interactions between town and gown; and
- Changing expectations for research, and relationships between teaching and research over time.
Abstracts of between 200 and 250 words should be submitted to julia.gatley@auckland.ac.nz by 31 January 2017, accompanied by a brief biographical statement.
There is a symposium fee of $50.00 NZD. This will include a book of abstracts.
We will not be publishing proceedings at the time of the symposium, but it is our intention to pursue the publication of the papers afterwards.
