The Acoustic City

"How does sound shape urban life? What do soundscapes reveal about the experience of modernity?  This innovative essay collection explores a series of critical themes including the diversity of urban soundscapes; acoustic flanerie and different ways of listening to the city; the emergence of specific associations between place, music and sound; and the acoustic ecology of architecture, landscape and urban design"

Hong Kong Architecture 1945 - 2015: From Colonial to Global

"This book focuses on the transformation from colonial to global - the formation, mechanism, events, works and people related to urban architecture.  The book reveals hardships the city encountered in the 1950s and the glamour enjoyed in the 1980s.  It depicts the public and private developments, and especially the public housing which has sheltered millions of residents.  The author identifies the architects practising in the formative years and the representatives of a rising generation after the 1980s. Suffering from land shortage and a dense environment, the urban development of Hong Kong has in the past 70 years met the changing demands of fluctuating economic activities and

Interstices 17

Interstices

In 2016, after many years of publishing the work of emerging and established researchers,Interstices: Journal of Architecture and Related Arts is resuming its earlier commitment to the publication of postgraduate student research design projects. Recent or ongoing postgraduate researchers in architecture and related art and design fields are invited to submit projects for a new peer-reviewed section of the journal.
Projects should be complete at the time of submission and are to include a design synopsis of 1500 words.
Project documentation and the synopsis should meet the following criteria:
  • Be original and unpublished previously
  • In the case of visual material, include no more than six indicative views of the proposal
  • In the case of moving image, animated sequences, or audio works, not exceed 4 minutes duration
  • Include a scholarly and critically contextualising synopsis for the project coauthored by both the project’s creator and the supervisor(s) involved. The synopsis should bear the name of the researcher as the primary author and the supervisor as the secondary author.
  • Establish an overt relationship with a particular journal issue thematic (where this exists).

While there is no specific thematic for issue 17, project authors may choose in this case to focus on the issue’s sub-theme, Return to Origins, when considering submissions.
Please submit full project documentation for the Interstices 17 journal issue to Dr Sue Hedges (shedges[AT]aut.ac.nz) by 8 August 2016. 22 August 2016

ABE Journal - Architecture Beyond Europe

ABE Journal - Architecture Beyond Europe

Call for papers: 'Paradoxical Southeast Asia'.

'In Southeast Asia, a space characterized by intense regional and global traffic networks since the sixteenth century, the architectural landscape is often seen as a palimpsest of styles. The hybrid and syncretic nature of Southeast Asian architectural forms is seen as the result of the successive waves of contacts that marked the history of this part of the world called by some the "Asian Mediterranean." (F. Gipoloux). In this genealogy of architectural types, the colonial moment has been often considered a rupture that introduced radically new forms in vernacular architecture. Following this logic, the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century are considered as moments of further intensification of this architectural acculturation. The adoption of the international style in the megacities of the

Drawing: Research, Theory, Practice

Call for Papers: Volume 2 Issue 1

Drawing: Research, Theory, Practice (DRTP) promotes and disseminates contemporary drawing practice and research in its current cultural and disciplinary diversity. The journal encourages pluralist forms of discourse, addressing current issues of theory and practice. It is concerned with drawing as an interactive process and product, as a form of writing or visual narrative, as a model of representation; an investigative, descriptive or interpretive pursuit, a recording and communicative tool; an interactive and dynamic 'site of conception'; as performance, an aid to critical thinking, an interpretative medium and as a site of production.

DRTP invites practitioners, researchers, educators and theorists in the disciplines of fine art, architecture, design, visual communication, technology, craft, animation, etc. to contribute articles, projects, essay and papers that deal with the various knowledges and representations of drawing.

VIRAL, Inaugural Issue of Technology | Architecture + Design

VIRAL, Inaugural Issue of Technology | Architecture + Design

VIRAL--the inaugural call for papers for TECHNOLOGY | ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN (TAD)--asks whether architecture is once again on the threshold of significant changes in the material, technical and procedural context of design. In the twenty-first century, information technologies are transforming how buildings are designed, constructed, delivered, occupied and assessed. From crowdsourcing to collective wisdom, information technology is redefining our relation to the environment and to each other. Yet, to what extent are architects, and those who educate them, actively involved in articulating a path for such technologies within their work—be it in their research, scholarship, or design work? Alternatively, to what extent are architectural educators cautious, resistant, or critical of this highly speculative engagement with barely recognizable or material forms of technology?

TAD seeks contributions from scholars, educators, designers, and architects who research, test and create using these emerging technologies and who seek to articulate and theorize the impact they will have on the built environment. The journal seeks articles that feature primary research in information technologies and their impact on materials, construction, structures, building systems, energy studies, environmental design, sustainability and resiliency, project delivery, and practice-based innovations. Papers should advance scholarship with a focus on the impact, translation and integration of technology in architecture and design.

Submissions due 1 September 2016.
