Walter Burley Griffin, when he wrote about his conception of the
proposed Roman Catholic College on Christmas Day, 1915, emphasised
the users' experience of facilities and functions of the new building. As an
artist, he did not write about its form, but instead embedded his ideas in its
plan, characterisation and appearance. Accordingly, this book is in two Parts.
An exhaustive description of functions, facilities and construction process
comprises Part 1: Specific. The building's form was read to explore Griffin's
ideas and design method in Part 2: Form.
Rebuild by Design (RBD) was developed for the Presidential
Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force after Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast
Coast of the United States in October-November, 2012. Using an
innovative, design driven process based on the design competition
model, 'Rebuild by Design' places local communities and civic leaders at the
heart of a robust, interdisciplinary creative process to generate
implementable solutions for a more resilient region. This book aims not so
much to illustrate what 'Rebuild by Design' did, but to reflect
on it, assess it in all its aspects and embed it in a broader context to offer
a guide for to politicians, designers, change managers,
community leaders, researchers, activists and others, offering future approaches wherever climate-change induced,
water-related urban challenges arise.
"...published in conjunction with an exhibition presenting
the radical architects and architect groups who emerged in Florence in the late
1960s. It was a period characterised by crisis in the city, which extended to
the wider political and social tension occurring throughout Italy. The related
writings, drawings, and projects produced by these seven actors – Archizoom,
Remo Buti, 9999, Gianni Pettena, Superstudio, UFO, and Zziggurat – have
influenced generations of architects, historians, designers, and artists around
the world. For the first time, all of their theoretical and visual work has
been compiled in a single publication, giving renewed insight into their
movement."
The Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies at the Harvard
Art Museums possesses over 2500 of the world’s rarest pigments. Visually and
anthropologically excavating the extraordinary collection, Atelier Editions’
monograph examines the contained artefacts’ providence, composition, symbology
and application. Whilst simultaneously exploring the larger field of
chromatics, utilising a variety of theoretical frameworks to interpret the
collection anew. An introduction to the monograph is authored by Straus Center
Director Dr. Narayan Khandekar.
Give Me Shelter provides an in-depth look at how design can bridge
the gap in services, to speed up the process of getting people off the streets
and into housing. In 2015, Los Angeles declared a state of emergency on
homelessness. Since then, homelessness has increased by nearly 30 percent,
underscoring how our homeless epidemic is more than a humanitarian crisis- it
is a call for action. Give Me Shelter tells the story of eleven
fourth-year architecture students and their two instructors’ journey through
the world of homelessness as they tackle real-world design solutions for
emergency stabilization housing. From nomadic and temporary shelters to the
city-supported and award winning Homes for Hope, Give Me Shelter follows the
MADWORKSHOP Homeless Studio and their designs from the encampments all the way
to City Hall.
