Refractions - artistic research in architecture.
This book focuses on new directions in architectural research, how architects develop new knowledge through their artistic design practice, working in a field between Art and Science. What new digital potentials are there in architectural media like models and drawings and how to put words on artistic research? The book offers theoretical articles, picture galleries of artistic projects, and interviews with senior-researchers at the Danish Academy of Architecture in Copenhagen and their built architectural projects.
Pierre Paulin: life and work
Author Nadine Descendre draws from previously unpublished archives a wealth of extraordinarily vivid drawings, models, and photographs, to reveal the restless energy of this mid‑century polymath. In addition to creating dozens of furniture and lighting designs for American and French firms, Paulin executed commissions for clients as diverse as Renault, Air France, Maison de la Radio, a hotel complex in Palmyra (Syria), and a delicately modulated series of rooms within the Elysée Palace (the French White House). Fascinated by the possibilities of new materials, Paulin was both a modernist and a traditionalist, a designer who took equal care whether designing ordinary objects such as fans, razors, and fondue pots or crafting superbly detailed furnishings for President Mitterand.

PARSE conference 2017

PARSE conference 2017
15-17 November 2017, Gothenburg

The second biennial PARSE conference at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, University of Gothenburg, takes as its point of departure the question of EXCLUSION.

How does exclusion operate at a local, national and international level both within the arts, in education and within cultural production more generally? How does one get to imagine oneself as an artist of any discipline – in terms of race, class and access to education? Within the arts, how can we improve access to learning and the formation of experience – and what can we model from other disciplines in this respect? How do images of exclusion – from media images of stranded civilians in Aleppo to molecular images of diseases untreated due to pharmaceutical drug finance and distribution – circulate as both knowledge and neutralisation? What are the politics of access? Do strategies and infrastructures of inclusion simply replicate and reinforce individualised imaginaries within broadly hierarchical social structures, particularly as artistic habits of production are increasingly exported as economised knowledge production to non-Western parts of the world?

Both within and far beyond the field of cultural production, people are excluded from territorial, subjective, environmental and imaginative spaces, be they national or virtual. The weight of the world, as Pierre Bourdieu would have it, is slighted against the vast majority of people living upon it. What forms of research and which actions can be taken within the artistic and pedagogical environment that hold open spaces of contact and forms of rights?

The PARSE conference on exclusion welcomes individual and collective proposals on the theme of exclusion from all disciplines. As well as the arts (visual art, design, performance, music, architecture, craft, etc.), we are particularly interested to learn from the social sciences, natural sciences, law, medicine as well as from the professional sphere. We welcome proposals for presentation nodes and are interested in all forms of presentation.

We are open to all formats:
Panels, performances, screenings, workshops, rhetorical statements, design proposals, sonic interventions, hearings, plans, public actions, etc.

Deadline for proposals: 10 February 2017

Living Machines 2017

Living Machines 2017
25-28 July 2017, Stanford University

The development of future real-world technologies will depend strongly on our understanding and harnessing of the principles underlying living systems and the flow of communication signals between living and artificial systems.

Architecture schools aggregator

"The Architecture Foundation has created the first comprehensive survey of masters-level architectural design teaching in London.

The site aggregates all 88 MArch and Diploma studios from London's eleven architecture schools into a single searchable database. The project intends to connect cutting-edge thinking in architecture and design, making it easier for tutors or students to find and connect with people researching similar issues across institutional and geographic boundaries."

See the database at the Architecture Foundation website.

Call for papers: Footprint, Delft Architecture Theory Journal

Footprint #22: Exploring Architectural Form: A Configurative Triad

Footprint is an academic journal dedicated to publishing architecture and urban research. Architecture and urbanism are the points of departure and the core interests of the journal. From this perspective, the journal encourages the study of architecture and the urban environment as a means of comprehending culture and society, and as a tool for relating them to shifting ideological doctrines and philosophical ideas. The journal promotes the creation and development – or revision - of conceptual frameworks and methods of inquiry. It is engaged in creating a body of critical and reflexive texts with a breadth and depth of thought which would enrich the architecture discipline and produce new knowledge, conceptual methodologies and original understandings.

Research Bazaar 2017

Research Bazaar 2017
21-23 February, University of Melbourne

The Research Bazaar (ResBaz) is a worldwide festival promoting the digital literacy emerging at the centre of modern research. The event is free and researchers from all career stages and walks of life are welcome.
Over three days attendees learn a variety of tools and skills that help them gain the digital literacy needed for doing cutting-edge research. While digital literacy is a large factor of the conference, ResBaz also aims to tackle larger research-based issues such as loneliness, isolation, research engagement, networking and finding career paths beyond the academy. The conference is therefore just as much about social interaction and community building, as it is about data analysis, acquisition and management.
More information and registration at the Research Bazaar website.
